Servers Expectations Versus Reality

Peter A. Dare

Over the past four to five years there has been a great deal of interest shown by the Broadcasters in implementing file servers in their operations, with the hope that with such implementation the use of video tape would be dramatically reduced and in some cases eliminated. The enabling technology that made the use of file servers a practicality is video compression. In many cases, the attractiveness of a file server has preceded the thought process of whether or not the system will work and what limitations the system may have. The expectation of many have not been able to be met in reality, the notion that a computer file server can be utilized in the video world has led to many misadventures in the world of video file servers.
