Comparative Analysis of Full Bandwidth Versus Compressed HDTV Routing

Broadcasters are now facing the dilemma of how to transition to digital distribution of HDTV signals. Central to this decision process is the need for modification or adaptation of an existing plant to handle the HDTV signal. This issue is extremely complex because system concepts and equipment designs are still in the formative stages, there is limited availability of hardware, costs are high and the FCC timetable for conversion to DTV is very aggressive. — For many installations a key consideration of the plant design is the possibility of employing an existing central router and the resultant need for use of signal compression. This is a fact of life since most if not all existing routers do not support the full bandwidth data rate required for HDTV. This study compares various routing scenarios in an effort to identify issues involved and determine the benefits and limitations of compressed versus full bandwidth routing configurations.
