Right-Sized Server Solutions: Blueprint for Efficiency

Allan Arthurs

The broadcast industry has long debated the relative merits of centralised versus distributed server architecture, the case of one large server or several smaller ones networked together. The relative merits and de-merits are a complex function of the individual application with all of its particular operational considerations along with channel bandwidth, storage capacity, redundancy and cost. This paper seeks to explore the underlying issues with a view to developing an effective strategy based on the smallest number of ‘right-sized servers’ for a variety of broadcast applications.
