Transcoding: A Step into the All-MPEG World

Marty Stein

The construction of MPEG-2 transport multiplexes for final transmission to the home is becoming more complex for Broadcasters and Cable System Operators. The rapidly increasing array of new content types and formats that are leading to a new viewing and entertainment experience means that these service providers have to carefully manage and mediate the composition of their fixed transmission pipes. This paper describes the basics of a relatively new technology, called MPEG-2 stream transcoding, that is now being deployed to help with these tasks.
