10 Gigabit Networking for Audio and Video Applications

Steve Lampen

On May 23, 1973, Robert Metcalf and David Boggs succeeded in sending low collision data packets down a cable. This occurred at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. Metcalf had gotten the inspiration while working on the ‘AlohaNet’ radio network linking the Hawaiian Islands built by data pioneer Norman Abramson. Since these data packets traveled through the ‘ether’ (i.e. wireless), this inspired the term Ethernet®. Metcalf was interested that packet collisions made such a system about 17% efficient. He applied advanced math theory that would eventually increase efficiency to almost 90%.
