MPEG Compression of High Frame Rate Progressively Scanned Images
This paper discusses experimental MPEG-2 (Moving Picture Experts Group) encoding of progressively scanned (non-interlaced) high frame rate (>70 Hz) ATV/HDTV (Advanced Television/High Definition Television) images at a bit rate appropriate for terrestrial transmission. The feasibility of scalable coding structures within the same bit budget is also being examined. — Image tiling of existing MPEG-2 decoders at standard definition television resolution can yield appropriate high resolution ATV/HDTV formats. The use of existing decoders in tiled formats provides an early way to implement ATV/HDTV receiving systems.
