Understanding the Video Server

Lynn Chroust

While much has been written about video servers at a conceptual level, i.e. the ability to instantly access material, multiple simultaneous streams, etc., little has been written about the key components of a video server and some fundamental rules under which these components operate. This article will endeavor to explain these components, how they work together and their limitations. In the end, after understanding the individual components and then viewing them as a whole system, it will become more clear as to how and why certain broadcast applications are feasible today, while others are on the verge of possibility.
