16×9 - The Challenge for the Broadcasters

Peter Cox

The challenge can be summarised as the following: (1) That there will be two co-existing home receiver populations to consider, 4 × 3 and 16 × 9. (2) The generation, storage, manipulation and transmission of 16 × 9 images with or alongside 4 × 3. (3) The type of plant a broadcaster will need and the economics of phasing in a 16 × 9 service. (4) The old basic practical problem of “fitting” - or in other words converting one aspect ratio to another for optimum display with a minimum loss of image content.
