The Interaction between Transfer Function and Compression in High Dynamic Range Video

Olie Baumann

Recent advances in television display technology have resulted in an increase in the dynamic range of display luminance offering the potential to deliver more of the information captured by the camera to the viewer. Amongst the potential solutions for delivering this additional information is the use of a non-linear transfer function which exploits the relative sensitivity of the human visual system to contrast differences in light and dark areas. This paper investigates the interaction between these transfer functions and HEVC video compression in terms of the perceptible artefacts.
