Immersive media experiences - what do we need to move forward?

Andrew Perkis, Asim Hameed

Discussing the current “state-of-the-art” in eXtended Realities (XR) is challenging as it exists across a large number of companies and sectors in form of fragmented bits, and is changing from quarter to quarter. However, it is important to raise awareness of its generic building blocks to start a discussion on the way to move forward. Some of the the most important building blocks are the definition of immersion, the new necessary tools and ways of digital storytelling and the quality of the final experiences as perceived by the participants. Considering the current wave of technologies in the field, it is essential to cultivate the creative platforms being developed for a lasting success compared to past endeavours. This paper will discuss the technical and creative considerations of immersive media experiences and instantiations of XR in the current transmedia environment. The paper also examines the social impact of such emergent technologies including established business models and the legal, ethical, and political implications of their use. For illustrative purposes, we will include a case study from our own research on using XR for sensor based digital storytelling in motivational training.
