Development of new 4K/8K UHDTV satellite broadcasting system in Japan

4K/8K UHDTV satellite broadcasts were launched on December 1, 2018 in Japan. One of these services is the first 8K UHDTV broadcast in the world. This broadcasting system adopts HEVC video coding with highly-efficient compression performance, a newly-developed ISDB-S3 transmission system which employs the 16APSK modulation scheme, and other new technologies. In this paper, we provide details of the new 4K/8K services, focusing on standardizing technical specifications and practical ways to introduce new reception systems into households.
