ATSC 3.0 In the Cloud
The transition to Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 is driving innovation in broadcasting by combining broadcast and broadband technologies for enhanced content distribution. This paper presents a reference architecture for implementing an ATSC 3.0 workflow in the cloud, focusing on the Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STLTP) transport over the public internet. Key features of ATSC 3.0 are highlighted, demonstrating the potential for cloud-based deployment. All components of an ATSC 3.0 system, except for the exciter and transmitter, can be implemented through cloud software, though reliability challenges persist. The dual reception capability of ATSC 3.0, which allows simultaneous content delivery from Over-the-Air (OTA) broadcast and Over-the-Top (OTT) broadband sources, is also examined. This capability enables seamless service delivery and provides a broadband backup for broadcast in case of STLTP disconnection. However, Content Delivery Network (CDN) overflow during broadcast disruptions is a concern. To mitigate origin load, Amazon CloudFront's caching layers, including Regional Edge Caches (REC) and Origin Shield, are analyzed and modeled. Additionally, the use of Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) protocols for STL distribution over public internet networks is explored, ensuring secure and reliable transmission with zero packet loss over long run tests with both Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) and Reliable Internet Stream Transport (RIST) protocols.
