Backhaul of Live Television Using JPEG2000 in MXF over RTP
Wavelet-based compression technology, such as JPEG2000, is emerging as an alternative to DCT-based solutions such as MPEG-2 and AVC. Benefits including picture by picture compression, 10 bit resolution, and uniform compression for all pixels, provide an improved starting point for post-production provided that sufficient bitrate is allocated in the IP transport network. — MXF is gaining ground in post-production as a generic format for exchange of video and for program delivery, the paper will give offer a focused discussion of the implementation and encapsulation of JPEG2000 in MXF over IP. — There are several different protocols in use for the JPEG2000 contribution. This paper will provide an overview of JPEG2000 encoder / decoder implementations with regard to MXF wrapping for transport over IP. This provides real time ingest directly on video servers in parallel to using the live signal for direct broadcasting. The solution allows for combining synchronized transport of television and metadata, A comparison to alternative wrapping solutions with respect to key features such as packet loss, forward error correction, latency and synchronization issues.
