Efficient Lossless to Lossy Transcoding of JPEG2000 Codestreams for D-Cinema

In this paper, a method of lossless to lossy transcoding of images is presented by taking advantage of bitplane coding of JPEG2000. In the case of decoding of JPEG2000 lossless codestream's and subsequent JPEG2000 lossy encoding of the decoded image, lots of computational time is consumed especially during JPEG2000 lossless decoding. In order to reduce the time, partial decoding of the lossless codestream is proposed. In addition, by employing a unique rate control, the degradation of image quality caused by partial decoding is reduced. Experimental results show that the computational complexity is dramatically reduced, while the subjective image quality is almost the same as one by full-decoding of lossless codestream.
