Contrasting Software Systems Integration Strategies for Large Scale Media Architectures

Chris Hinton, Dan Shockley, Michael Koetter

The prevailing method for media systems integration is trending towards orchestration of a number of loosely coupled services via process automation frameworks. And who can blame anyone for wanting to avoid point to point integrations that are difficult to re-purpose, costly to maintain & lacking flexibility as business needs change? Yet, as the key ingredients for these loosely coupled “orchestration” frameworks have evolved, so have the web-driven frameworks to support lightweight “choreographed” interactions between networked service endpoints. — This paper compares and contrasts these strategies. We explore techniques for bridging heterogeneous integration techniques, ultimately arguing that a hybrid model provides the optimal mix of flexibility, performance, reliability, rapid integration & maintainability.
