A Study of the Optical Distribution Costs of Multichannel Baseband Digital Broadcasts over a FTTH Network
We have previously proposed a baseband time-division multiplexing method for the transmission of digital broadcasts over FTTH. Here, we evaluate the transmission equipment cost of the proposed method based on a simple assumed distribution network. We predict that the cost can be decreased to 11–36% of that of conventional sub-carrier multiplexing (SCM) and FM conversion transmission methods. By analysing the dominant factors affecting the cost, we show that significant savings are achieved due to the fact that an optical signal can be received at a lower power using the proposed method than for signals transmitted using conventional methods.
