A Compatible High Fidelity TV Standard for Satellite Broadcasting

Direct broadcasting of television to the home from the satellite will be a reality by the middle of this decade in Europe. In the United States of America, satellite plans are not yet fixed and a number of proposals have been made including the use of High Definition Television, with higher numbers of lines and requiring a much wider bandwidth than that for existing television systems. In the USA therefore, the options for Satellite Broadcasting are still wide open. But what is the position in Europe, and are ideas now developing in Europe applicable to the USA?
