Broadcasting from Satellites

The use of artificial earth satellites to distribute television signals has commanded the attention of those interested in broadcasting ever since this application of space technology became a distinct possibility. The interest of SMPTE in this field is quite active as evidenced by the Symposium on Commercial Satellites during its Technical Conference in Los Angeles in April 19711 and by the seven papers on satellite transmission of TV signals presented at the 110th Technical Conference of the Society in Montreal (October 1971). Three of the papers, concerned with point-to-point distribution of television signals have been published.2–4 A further three papers were concerned with broadcasting television signals from a satellite; these are published immediately below.
