Characteristics of Motion Picture and Television Screens
Two fundamental factors, brightness gain and reflectance or transmittance, determine the suitability of a screen material in any particular application. High brightness gain, which necessarily implies a narrow viewing angle, may be desirable in one application but not in another. The reflectance or transmittance of the screen material is a measure of the light efficiency. — Comparative figures for several commonly used screen materials are presented. Both front and rear projection screens are considered. Fundamental photometric concepts are reviewed and laboratory equipment is described. The figures are considered to be accurate to within about 5%, and are in reasonable agreement with the few published figures available.
