A Microsecond Still Camera

Harold E. Edgerton, Kenneth J. Germeshausen

A shutter with an effective open time of about 1 μsec is described which was specially designed to photograph high explosives during detonation. Precision adjustment of the exposure instant by a time-delay circuit triggered by the explosion light is used for synchronization. Optical systems of focal lengths of 6 in. to 6 ft have been employed. Examples are given of pentolite and TNT explosions.
