Architectural and Acoustic Design of Temporary Broadcasting Facilities
The architectural and acoustic design of broadcast and production facilities always presents a formidable challenge. Production, operational, and economic factors must be considered in the overall design of any new facility. A temporary facility places an additional burden in cost and scheduling. This article reviews the operational and technical requirements for the 75,000-sq. -ft. NBC facility in Seoul, South Korea, for the 1988 Olympic Games. The design philosophy is compared with the design of permanent production facilities and their environmental, acoustic, and technical requirements. The various facilities, compromises in materials, scope, and construction are reviewed, with emphasis on how these techniques can be applied in the economical construction of television production facilities.
