HDTV Production: A Low-Cost Transition Option

Stan Baron

The production system and associated plan for transition to HDTV adopted by terrestrial broadcasters in the U.S. must function within certain bounds. First, it must be of sufficient quality to provide the production services necessary to meet the needs of the production community. Second, it must function within realistic and practical technical and economic bounds appropriate to the broadcasters' marketplace. This article discusses some of the practical problems that can be encountered in implementing a transition plan and offers a low-cost transition option.
