A high-definition (HD) videocassette recorder (VCR) with a single-channel analog baseband recording method has been developed to provide a convenient means for long-time recording and reproducing of HD programs for both semiprofessional use and home entertainment. By introducing a newly developed high-efficiency video signal encoding method to realize single-channel baseband recording, and through improvement in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) techniques, a maximum recording time of 150 min with a 1/2-in. small cassette is achieved for 1125/60 HD standard signals. This article describes the techniques used to realize a new HD VCR capable of wideband and high-quality picture reproduction.
