The 1991 Progress Report: Prepared by the Progress Committee of the SMPTE: Foreword

Irwin W. Young

This past year the Society celebrated its 75th anniversary. We began as a society of motion-picture engineers dealing with the technology of film, and later, in the 1950s, embraced a new technology and expanded the Society name to include “Television.” We are again faced with new challenges as the new technologies of high-resolution imaging and multimedia become integrated into the Society. The activities of the Society have the basic aim of advancing all these technologies.
