Challenges in Full-Motion Video/Audio for Personal Computers

Edwin J. Kroeker

Video compression and manipulation, audio digitization/signal processing, and fine-pitch manufacturing and component technologies have been combined to produce add-in peripheral cards that allow a personal computer user to collect, edit, manipulate, and output video and audio information. This article develops a model of what a full-motion video/audio peripheral card for a personal computer should be, and discusses some of the implementation design challenges. The functional elements and data paths for such a video peripheral are presented, together with a brief description of how the design challenges of the new product were met.
