Using the simultaneous double layer coating method, the magnetic layer of metal particulate (MP) media can be thinned to submicron thickness. The electromagnetic characteristics of the MP with a thin and highly packed magnetic layer were studied. When high-frequency sinusoidal signals were recorded, the reproduced output achieved its maximum at the thickness corresponding to the effective thickness of recording layer. The output was approximately equal to that of the Hi-8 metal evaporated (ME) media. As for digital recording, reducing the magnetic layer thickness to below 0.5 μm brought about the decrease of the half-peak width (W50), thus decreasing the intersymbol interference and increasing the recording density (D50). These results indicate that this MP has superior performance in high-density recording.
