NVRSC: The Design of a Graphical Interface for a Router Switch Controller

Neill Allen

As routing switchers increase in size (512 × 512 and larger are now available) and as the variety of mixed format routing switches increases, a need has developed for a better control environment. This article describes a graphical control system that uses an icon-based computer environment to configure, document, and control digital routing switches. The hierarchical control structure allows quick access to port-connection information, configuration information, and control functions for changing settings in either a live or preset situation. A description of the graphical setup is presented with a breakdown of the system components. Router configuration, control, and port-access information display windows are discussed. The controller and interfaces described comprise a system that graphically presents the state of the routers in an environment that speeds access to easy-to-read information for both analysis and control.
