Problems and Perspectives of Digital Terrestrial Television in Europe

B. Marti, D. Nasse, P. Bernard, B. Le Floch

Digital terrestrial television broadcasting is now clearly feasible, and in the U.S. there is a firm commitment to devoting it to high-definition television (HDTV) exclusively. This is not, however, the only possibility. In Europe, extensive studies have been or are being carried out that indicate that portable reception could also be an attractive service. This is backed by efficient and ruggedized, field-proven, spread-spectrum modulation systems that could be of interest in the U.S. as well. Coordinated efforts in Europe outline a possible system that would have the support of the various parties involved and feature both high-quality pictures for fixed reception and reduced quality for portables.
