The Evolution of Digital Audio and Video Format Conversions

Keith Y. Reynolds

In the early days of television recording, there was little need for video format conversion because the output of the videotape recorder (VTR) was analog NTSC or PAL. It was not until component analog video (CAV) became a viable alternative to composite analog that format conversion products became useful. These conversion devices must be as transparent as possible to maintain the highest quality and at the same time must also be cost-effective. The technical challenges of format conversions are described in this article.
