An Optical Disc Solution for Digital Video Storage
The advent of digital video systems for capturing, manipulating, and transmitting digitized images has created challenges for existing technologies because very high data volumes and data transfer rates are necessary to reproduce high-quality video images. While digital data compression methods have made it possible to consider using digital video for everyday applications, there is still a challenge when a significant amount of digital video needs to be stored for future use. This paper describes a storage method using an optical disc technology that promises a convenient low-cost solution to the digital video storage problem. This method allows permanent storage of as much as four hours of broadcast-quality digital video or one hour of digital HDTV on a single side of a 12-in. recordable disc. This technology will be available very soon and is expected to have a major impact on many applications of digital video.
