Experiments on Proposed Multiplexing Scheme for Vertical-Temporal and Vertical High Helper Signals in EDTV-II

In Japan, a letterbox format has been chosen for the wide-aspect ratio in EDTV-II. The horizontal high (HH) signal is transmitted by using the “Fukinuki Hole” on the main panel. The vertical-temporal (VT) and vertical high (VH) signals are transmitted in the top and bottom bars. The authors have already proposed a multiplexing scheme for both VT and VH signals where the signals are multiplexed in different spaces of the vertical-temporal frequency domain, and then the multiplexed signal modulates the subcarrier to avoid synchronization errors in receivers. The proposed scheme has been implemented with prototype hardware. This article shows that the VT and VH signals can be separated without significant crosstalk at receivers, and that the vertical and temporal resolution can be improved in moving as well as in stationary areas.
