Visual Investigation of the Head-Tape Interface in an HDTV Digital Baseband VCR
High-density and high data rate recording must be realized to obtain a long recording time in a high-definition VCR system, in which short-wavelength recording and a multichannel cluster head are necessary. The spacing between the magnetic head and the magnetic tape has a great influence on recording and playback characteristics in a short-wavelength system. Therefore, the spacing between a multichannel cluster head and the magnetic tape has been investigated using transparent dummy heads and an original image-processing method. The influence of the head projection and tape tension on the head-tape spacing in a cluster-head system is made clear. Effective improvements to reduce the head-tape spacing of the individual heads of a cluster, and to realize a low tape tension VCR system, are discussed in this article.
