From Post-Production to the Cinema of the Future
Early in 1992, SMPTE's San Francisco Section held their monthly meeting at Pacific Bell's Corporate Headquarters in San Ramon, Calif. The focus centered on the transmission of high-definition television (HDTV) over telephone networks and included a reenactment of a Golden State Warriors basketball game sent from the Oakland Coliseum; attendees were also treated to a tour of Pacific Bell's Broadband Network Research Laboratory. As a result of this meeting, Pacific Bell made the decision to unite with Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) in an attempt to test the concept of video transmission over telephone lines using a more practical application. The results of those efforts and how the Advanced Broadcast Video Service (ABVS) was used in the making of the film Jurassic Park are detailed in this paper.
