Results of a New Receiver Overscan Survey
The last SMPTE receiver image area survey was conducted in 1971. There have been considerable developments in receiver design since that time. This article presents the results of a new survey of receivers. A standard value for receiver overscan for 4×3 and 16×9 television sets is proposed. The proposed value is intended to reduce wasted bandwidth, as well as improve and standardize the appearance of motion pictures transferred to television. If implemented in conjunction with a modified telecine scanned film area proposed in a separate article, the entire projectable film area would be visible to the home viewer, and full bidirectional transfer capability between film and video systems would be attained.
