A Digital 1.2 Gbit/sec VCR for a Universal Recording Format of HD Image Data
For post-production purposes a recorder with a playing time of 60 min is needed. Compared to the D-2 recording format, a digital HDTV signal contains 10 times the amount of information that has to be stored on the tape. This article outlines the technical details of a digital VCR developed by BTS that handles data rates of up to 1.2 Gbits/sec and reports on experiences gained. The steps for selecting an appropriate tape transport are discussed, as well as the magnetic footprint on tape for the universal recording format jointly proposed by Toshiba Corp. of Japan and BTS GmbH (Germany).
