An Engineering Perspective

Kenneth P. Davies

Worldwide, 1994 has been a year of change. It is clear that the development era of digital television is over and that the implementation era is in full swing. The priority has moved from developing the technology and tools to one of execution, building the infrastructure for the rapidly developing businesses founded on digital video and audio. Production, distribution, delivery, and storage are all similarly affected. New business opportunities in interactive imaging are being taken up and brought to market. Digital delivery into the home, pioneered by DirectTV, has arrived. Digital delivery over cable and telecommunications lines is happening in many locations in North America and around the world. Great progress has been made in the move to fully digital, over-the-air delivery in the Grand Alliance ATV system. Nineteen ninety-four can certainly be considered as the year that marked the arrival of the fully digital era.
