COM3: A Cross-Effect-Free Compatible Composite Coding Technique
A composite compatible component (COM3) coder enables a corresponding decoder to deliver cross-effect-free pictures from an NTSC or PAL-compatible signal. The system also has the potential for wider chrominance and luminance bandwidth than from standard composite encoding. It enables composite studio equipment to be used to make programs with technical quality approaching that of digital components. Applications include composite archiving for material for future upconversion to HDTV and widescreen program production for EDTV and PALplus. The COM3 signal is particularly suited to composite digital recording. A COM3 coder or decoder with digital input and output interfaces (to the ANSI/SMPTE 259–1993 interface specifications) can be accommodated in a one rack unit high module.
