An IC Implementation of SMPTE RP 165: Error Detection and Handling

Singar Bala, Eric Fankhauser, Paul Moore

As digital video installations become larger and more complex, there is a growing need to monitor the quality of the numerous serial links making up the digital communication infrastructure. The SMPTE has approved a method to meet this need in a recent recommended practice, RP 165. Commonly called “Error Detection and Handling (EDH),” RP 165 describes a means for ensuring the integrity of video, audio, and ancillary data transmitted over the serial digital interface (SDI). The GS9001, a new integrated circuit (IC) under development, implements RP 165 in a practical, cost-effective manner.
