A Digital Editing Suite in an Analog Environment
After installing a digital serial editing suite with connections to analog devices via digital-to-analog (D/A) and analog-to-digital (A/D) converters, the limit of D/A conversion was obvious. Rise and fall times after start of active video (SAV) and before end of active video (EAV), which are not in conformity with the analog requirements, produce massive ringing. Missing requirements in CCIR 601/656 and SMPTE 259M are giving all designers the ability to interpret the recommendations as they like. ITU and SMPTE are now looking into how the recommendations shall be interpreted. The implementation of digital filtering at the source, where the digital signal is generated, is necessary.
