The 4:2:2 Profile of MPEG-2 for Use in a Studio Environment

Christof Ricken

In January 1996 a new subset of the tools of MPEG-2, called the 4:2:2 Profile, was standardized. It is intended for use in production studios and similar environments where the Main Profile does not meet requirements such as editing accuracy, multigeneration performance, etc. This paper deals with the reasons for the creation of this new standard, points out the differences compared with the Main Profile, and evaluates its performance. Multiple generations, digital video effects, chroma keying, and behavior in cascading with different compression schemes are considered in detail.
