A New Computer-Based, Objective Measurement System for Compressed Audio Using Perceptual Analysis on Short Interval Test Signals

Marvin Nolan, Robert Tremblay

This paper describes an objective measurement system based on noise-to-mask ratio principles, designed and built at Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC) Corporate Engineering, to test audio quality in radio and TV productions and networks that employ full or bit-rate-reduced digital and analog audio links. During the course of its development, this measurement system evolved to the point where it is now capable of being used in testing equipment and systems for the purpose of evaluation, acceptance, and maintenance. It has also been found useful as a production tool for signal-processing control.
