The 525-Line Progressive Scan Signal Digital Interface Standard and System

Akihiro Hori

The 525-line progressive scan system (525P) is used mainly as the input signal for EDTV-II in Japan, which is an NTSC-compatible letterbox transmission scheme. It is also a candidate for the SDTV (standard-definition television) signal format in the U.S. Two 525P signal interface formats, 4:2:2P and 4:2:0P, have been standardized by SMPTE in the U.S. and the ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses, previously BTA) in Japan. The reasons for proposing these interfaces, as well as their advantages, are discussed in this paper.
