Message from the Executive Director
David George states in his President's Message, “When elected to direct the affairs of your Society on your behalf, the Board of Governors assumed the responsibility to prudently and to the best of their ability provide advice, counsel, and guidance to the executives and staff of SMPTE with regard to both direction and operations. Members of this Board do not really have the option to sidestep the difficult decisions that must be made from time to time that, while correct, are also distateful and may include unpleasant consequences. The decision to raise annual dues falls squarely in this category, and while your Board was unanimous in recognizing the necessity to rationalize the financial affairs of the Society, they were also very much aware that this action would cause additional hardship for and among some members. Nonetheless, in an act 1 view as a responsible one, they have authorized a dues increase from the present $80 to $95 per year for active membership. To ease the burden somewhat, the Board suggested that existing members be offered the opportunity, upon renewal, to prepay up to three years' dues at the current rates. thus delaying the effect of the increase and still providing your Society with sufficient cash flow to meet its current needs. Your renewal notice, when received, will offer you this option in addition to the annual renewal at the new rate.”
