Applications of Digital Video: Bandwidth Requirements on Shared Media Servers and Networks
Video servers and high-bandwidth local area networks are rapidly being adopted in broadcast and professional video applications. As the emphasis shifts from tape-machine replacement to simplification or re-engineering of operational processes, the required systems become more complex and the need for methodical system analysis becomes more acute. This paper develops a model that connects basic video facility requirements to technology-specific parameters necessary to specify the throughput of digital video platforms and networks. Although the basic model is simple, it is quantitative and permits practical scenarios to be analyzed. We have applied this model to a few sample systems, ranging in complexity from simple disk server architectures to networks with complex topology.
