Fiber-Optic Transmission of SMPTE 259M and SMPTE 292M SDI Signals
This paper, in the form of a review, introduces some technical aspects dealing with fiber-optic digital transmitters. The special case of the serial digital interface (SDI) data transmitter is considered. The paper presents the basic features of semiconductor laser structures; the problem of laser light modulation and stabilization is discussed, especially for direct modulation; and SDI signal features are briefly reviewed. The most commonly used mean-value stabilization loop is analyzed, and its limited performance for SDI signal transmission is demonstrated. Finally, the SDI designated feed-forward compensated stabilization loop is proposed, and its properties are analyzed.
