MPEG-7: Relevance and Applications to Broadcasting

E. Hartley, A. P. Parkes

This paper describes the framework and current development status of the MPEG-7 standard by discussing its relationship to other relevant multimedia metadata standardization activities, and illustrates the relevance of the standard to the broadcast industry through the support MPEG-7 offers production and asset management by enabling new applications. An outline and the framework to support such new applications is described. Related work at Lancaster University, U. K., has developed a model for video content representation. The paper discusses how this model is being applied to the problem of automating video annotation through the use of a bi-directional approach.
