Approaching the Shannon Limit in Digital Broadcasting

Simon Waddington, Keith Pickavance

The aim of this paper is to describe the latest developments in error-correcting codes with near-Shannon Limit performance and their applications to digital broadcasting. In the past several years, many remarkable new classes of error-correcting codes have been discovered, which offer the prospect of almost optimal performance in practical communication systems. In conjunction with higher order modulation schemes, they will have a profound influence on digital broadcasting well into the next millennium. The paper contains an overview of the latest coding schemes, describing the improvements in performance that can be achieved, as well as some practical issues in their implementation.
