Surround: The Current Technological Situation

With the Audio Engineering Society's annual conference for 2000 entitled “Surrounded by Sound,” and the SATIS conference in Paris majoring on ‘Surround,’ it is clear that ‘Surround’ is becoming the “next big thing.” In spite of all the activity, however, the answers to many questions are unclear. What is “surround sound?” How do you record it? How do you play it back? And where is it heading in the market? In this paper I offer some personal answers to these questions.
