High-Performance Electro-optic Camera Prototype

Stephen A. Stough, William A. Hill

A prototype camera was built to determine if the color space, exposure range, exposure latitude, and alias-free resolution of an electronic capture system could match that of a film camera. Certain design techniques of astronomical sensors were combined with new methods of CCD charge transfer and large-format integrated circuit fabrication to create a 4096 pixel × 3112 pixel detector. This detector was integrated into a prototype motion picture camera system and subjected to engineering tests. This paper describes design goals, over-all design of the prototype system, and initial test results. A brief description of alternative technologies is given, and areas of future research are outlined.
