Electronic Field Production at NHK Using Compact Lightweight Equipment

Yoshio Kuwabara

Electronic field production of programs has been spurred at NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corp.) by their development of compact and lightweight video systems. The NHK's Technical Research Laboratory, for example, has developed a newsgathering system consisting of a single-tube camera and a helical-scan videotape recorder, operated by one person. Another system, developed by the Outside Broadcast Division, employs a standard portable camera and a small 2-in quadruplex VTR (or a small microwave transmitter) installed in a passenger automobile. Helicopters fitted with automatic tracking devices are being used both to show viewers how Japan looks from the air and to relay coverage of events to the Broadcasting Center.
